Mental detritus, random musings, words I wish I'd written, and whatever else finds me along the way. =)

Maybe I’m old. Maybe I’m from the Upper-Midwest. Maybe I think too much of my service to my country (and my Father’s and my Son’s).  But to think that this isn’t a big F* You to the US, you’re naive.
There are 10 gazillion OTHER places they could build this community center. Putting it smack dab in the middle of the site of the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil - An attack led and executed by men of the same faith… It’s not just insensitive of  them to request it, it’s negligent of NYC officials to be allowing it.
This isn’t about tolerance (if you’d like an idea of what intolerance looks like, please check out the cover story to this weeks Time magazine), this is about being sensitive to the memory of those who lost their lives and the families they left behind.

Let the unfollowing begin because I agree with Scott 100% and it’s not a personal overreaction to it, it’s out of respect for the people who died that day and the years that followed. Remember, sometimes people under react as well and are too open minded or care free.

I am with Fred and Scott. To me its the same as the catholic church building a church in downtown Baghdad.

not american, and i couldnt care less if they build a new burger king there or a mosque or whatever…but to be honest…this is just way, way out of line.  someone’s  really taking the piss there. i am with less on this one…thats like a church with a football stadium and a macdrive in Baghdad.

It’s nothing like that.  America is (or at least claims to be) the home of religious freedom.  New York City is the multi-cultural center of the world.  Baghdad?  Not so much.  “It’s like building a church in Baghdad” is a dead analogy that holds no bearing on this situation.  Scott says they shouldn’t build it because the 9/11 attackers are “men of the same faith.”  That’s like saying white women shouldn’t marry black football players because of OJ Simpson.  These people aren’t suggesting the construction of a fucking terrorist training camp.  It’s a place of worship.  Of course, I guess a lot of people find those two things to be synonymous because of crippling ignorance or fear or some third thing.
I’m proud of the fact that I didn’t use the phrase “let the terrorists win,” and I totally could have because it’s actually appropriate here.   Eternal sigh.

Let me add to the previous post the fact that it won’t be exclusively a place of worship, nor will it be exclusively for muslim use. It will be a community center. You know, for the WHOLE COMMUNITY. A community that wants it to be built, based on the opinions of the people who ACTUALLY LIVE there. (i.e. none the people I’ve seen protesting/freaking out about it)
It’s not about disrespect. Disrespect would be allowing knee-jerk ignorance and fear to rule our lives, our healing, and the basic tenets of decent humanity.
